This pygmy beaked whale was found stranded fresh-dead in Humboldt county, CA, USA
The young pygmy whale was transported to a local specialty veterinary clinic where it underwent a CT scan prior to necropsy. CT allows evaluation of the internal tissues and structures that can become disrupted during the necropsy process. Arrows point to pathologies identified. Bilateral mandibular and maxilla fractures, mandibular acoustic fat pad hemorrhage and multifocal intravascular gas accumulations are seen. 2D and 3D images are used to display the pathologies.
