goals of the website

The goals of this website are to:

  1. -give basic information regarding available diagnostic imaging modalities

  2. -explain the different modalities available for use in diagnostic imaging

  3. -disseminate information on disease processes investigated using diagnostic imaging

  4. -ultimately provide a forum for discussion and for those seeking advice on this subject

OVERVIEW

Diagnostic imaging refers to the use of radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine for the diagnosis of disease processes.

It is important to have an understanding of the ‘inner workings’ of the modality you are using in order to understand its limitation and potential pitfalls as well as having an understanding of the biological system, or species, that you are investigating. While such detailed explanation is beyond the scope of this website, a simple overview is offered.

Without a knowledge of ‘normal’ there is no diagnosis of ‘abnormal’. What does this mean? It means more work needs to be done documenting normal anatomy in marine mammals before the often more interesting abnormal features can be described. Collaborative work between a number of centers is currently in place in an attempt to fill these gaps and provide normal radiographic anatomy across a number of marine mammal species.

Over the next few pages the intent is to explain the basics of the modalities typically available for use with marine mammals, as well as providing selected examples of normal radiographic, CT and MRI anatomy where the information has been gathered. The site concludes with examples of appearance of selected disease, links to the site contributors and a list of useful links.
